Camera Ballistics identifies anomalies in each image and uses this information to create a description of the device sensor. The sensor is the part in every digital camera that collects light in millions of pixels and converts it into an image. Due to differences in size and material, each pixel can behave differently making each sensor unique. This is true even between devices of the same make and model. It's these differences that allow you to generate a sensor fingerprint and link an image to the specific camera that created it. 

 

Only 2-steps to digital Forensic expertise

Camera Ballistics takes its complex analysis method and turns it into a simple two-phase process. Simply create a few reference photos with the suspect camera for the to program learn about the device's sensor and a sensor fingerprint will automatically be generated. Camera Ballistics will use this fingerprint to analyze the photos you are investigating and match it to the ones taken by the suspected camera.

 

Analyze

This step will match the fingerprint file created by the Learn process to the photos under investigation. When you run the analysis, you can see the processing progress followed by the mathematical data and results as after analysis. Finally, a PDF report of the results is generated with thumbnails of all processed images.

Learn

In this first step, you will supply reference photos from a camera in order to create its sensor fingerprint. The more photos you make the more precise your results will be. It is recommended to make 30-80 photos of white walls or clouds (i.e. images without sharp shapes and edges).  You will supply the algorithm with this folder of images (up to 200) to be processed. Once analyzed you will choose a name for the fingerprint file.

All possible information such as device make, model, GPS, camera settings, mean square error, fingerprint presence result, probability, and correlation will be organized into a well-designed and comprehensive PDF report, suitable for submission as evidence.

 

Interpreting the results of image source identification

Camera Ballistics alerts the user and shows the results' probability of accuracy.  Images whose characteristics have been altered by rotation, enlargement, cropping, or other forms of editing, will not contain any traces of the sensor fingerprint.

Please note that results should be interpreted like other typical ballistics tests: if traces of the device fingerprints are not found in a digital image, it doesn't necessarily mean that the particular device has not been used to capture the image.

Case applications

Proof that an image matched to a camera can be just as lethal to a case defense as a bullet matched to a gun.

 

One of the most sensitive crimes law enforcement deals with is child pornography. When a suspect has terabytes of explicit images, proving which images were made by the suspect's camera would be a daunting task. Camera Ballistics would be able to quickly process and prove which photos were created by a camera device in the suspect's possession.

Eliminate reasonable doubt and increase the credibility of a photo by verifying that the image definitively came from an individual camera. Camera Ballistics can also be used to solidify or disprove a suspect's whereabouts when an alibi is in question.  

Identify possible photo manipulation. Identify the source camera's sensor fingerprint and if a disputed photo doesn't match the fingerprint it has be altered or was not taken by that camera.
